Granite Construction Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Improvement (Santa Paula)

Structural engineering services for hot mix asphalt plant capacity improvements at Granite Construction’s Santa Paula facility, performed in coordination with Astec Industries.

The project required structural evaluation and redesign of an existing 20-year-old mat foundation originally intended to support six storage silos, but only partially utilized with four silos installed at the time of original construction. In order to accommodate two new 150-ton silos, the foundation system was reanalyzed and qualified under current structural code requirements, creating a complex engineering challenge involving legacy design assumptions, updated loading criteria, and compatibility with existing plant infrastructure.

The completed improvements allowed for safe expansion of silo storage capacity while extending the useful life of the original foundation system.
